The Lancashire Prison for Paranormals lived up to its reputation. I paced the cell, unable to believe that I was in the very same place in which my dad had spent years of his life. Blank walls greeted me on all sides, with a single door inset with a barred window showing me an equally blank-looking corridor outside. Not a very inspiring sight.

The walls were covered with a spell that stopped my fairy magic working, and I couldn’t even fly. I paced instead, anything to keep my thoughts from lingering on the fact that I was here for the long haul. How had my dad managed to stand this for years without going mad?

Imagining him sitting here without complaint, knowing he’d have to keep his secret for my safety and for everyone else’s… despite it all, I couldn’t stop the tears from falling as I sank to the floor. Now that the Inquisitor had taken the Seeing Stone, had it all been for nothing?

I hadn’t even been allowed to say goodbye before I’d been hauled off to prison by Clearwater’s fairies, where the hunters had been waiting to take me into custody. It was as I’d feared; Clearwater had total control not only over every single hunter who worked in the top security jail but also over all the local branch leaders, so he didn’t even have to pull strings to convince them to lock me up for life.

I scrubbed my eyes with the backs of my hands, anger replacing my grief. I’d surrendered to spare my friends, but would Clearwater genuinely leave them alone while I was locked up and unable to help them? I couldn’t count on it. And the knowledge that I could resist the Seeing Stone’s power while my dad couldn’t bothered me like an itch I couldn’t reach. That was the true reason he wanted me out of his sight. I was the one fairy he was unable to control.

As I was pacing the room for what felt like the fiftieth time, the door to my cell clicked open, and Clearwater himself entered. He wore his human glamour, and the Seeing Stone was nowhere in sight. “Well?”

“Well what?” I croaked, wishing he wasn’t here to see me crying. “You don’t have to pretend to be human, do you? Why the disguise?”

“It’s easier this way.” He closed the door. “I wanted to see how you were getting on.”

I pushed to my feet. “What, have you come to gloat?”

“Not at all,” he said. “I was considering allowing you access to a Pixie-Glass. I’m not so heartless that I’d forbid you from contacting your family.”

I forced a laugh. “Next, you’ll be letting me out on the solstice.”

“Did you know I invented that practise just for your father’s sake?” he asked. “Few others took me up on the offer. It was all for him and for others of his kind.”

“Fairies,” I surmised. “You’re one too. Why are you still hiding your face? Are you ashamed?”

“Not at all.” He studied me.
